Walking Rugby Open Day. Sunday 26th August 2018 at Reading RFC.
Invitation to all Berkshire Clubs to a Walking Rugby Open Day on Sunday 26 August at Reading RFC.
I imagine that your club already makes provision for your younger members by running mini and junior sides. Well, what about your more senior members?
At Reading RFC, in addition to the usual men’s sides, we have a ladies team, junior boys and girls teams and we also have Walking Rugby. Introduced in November 2015, this form of the game has gone from strength to strength.
Originally set up as one session per week with senior retired participants in mind, it soon grew to three sessions to enable working players to take part too. It a wholly inclusive non-contact game which is suitable for men and women of all ages and abilities. Our team includes many who have never played any form of rugby before and several recovering from serious health issues. It is also a form of rehabilitation for players returning from injury.
We have found a very positive reaction to Walking Rugby from most of those that have tried it, be they lapsed players, ex-players who thought they were now too old to participate in any form of rugby or newbies who are attracted to the sport but want a no-contact, easy entry level. We have managed to recruit many new social members to our club simply through the provision of Walking Rugby and consequently, Reading RFC now offer a form of rugby from cradle to grave.
Walking Rugby is a great way of having fun, staying active and being part of a very social group. It has gained in popularity in the South West where there are at least six sides playing the game regularly and particularly in the Bristol area. However, we are the only club in Berkshire and the surrounding area to offer this and we are very keen to spread the word amongst our neighbouring clubs and to see the game grow.
On Sunday, 26th August, we are hosting a Berkshire Walking Rugby Open Day at Reading RFC where we will be demonstrating the game and we are keen to encourage other local clubs to join in. Please can you let me know who in your club would be the most appropriate contact for me to provide information to. We would be delighted if you were able to send along some representatives either to observe or to take part with the aim that you might be persuaded to introduce it at your own club.
To give you a flavour of the game, you can watch a short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLKl6Rv1nEk&index=2&list=PLcSP18b0KfWO4uGo9Nqem3J-rDOOyGIXh which was filmed by the RFU at Reading.
Additionally, we produced a video of our own at a Tuesday morning session which can be viewed via the following link: https://youtu.be/1LmgjdgdWX4. Finally, a copy of the RFU’s Walking Rugby Guidelines are attached for information.
Please come and join us; you will be given a warm welcome.
