Berkshire U18s Update

Please welcome this season's U18 Berkshire rugby squad - Sponsored by The Oracle Shopping Centre, Reading.

Over the last month this squad have represented Berkshire in 3 divisional play off games. The first was a warm up game against Dorest and Wiltshire, played at Maidenhead RFC. As warm up games go it couldn'thave gone any better. The lads won the game in style, scoring 6 tries and only conceding one in return.

In the first divisional game Berkshire took on Gloucestershire. The game started at great pace, both teams carrying hard and defending well. Berkshire's strong pack then started to make a difference and the trys started to flow. To give Gloucestershire their due, the never gave up, they kept coming and their hard work was rewarded at the end of the game with 3 late tries. The final score was Berkshire 55 (11 tries) - Gloucestershire 15 (3 tries).

In the final match Berkshire was drawn against the much fancied Buckinghamshire side who had dominated Somerset the previous week. The Berkshire boys in the lead up to this game had trained hard and reviewed the footage from the previous week.

We knew this game was going to be tough but the boys came out of the blocks like men possessed. Both teams started hard, with lots of dominant tackles, but after around 5 minutes Berkshire was in the ascendency and went over the white wash to score the first try. Only minutes later Berkshire were on the attack again scoring an amazing try from a cross field kick that any premiership side would have been proud of.

The Berkshire boys maintained the pressure, taking their chances in attack and defending superbly and I am pleased to report that the final score was Berkshire 30 (6 tries) - Buckinghamshire 0.

So, in summary, Berkshire scored a total of 23 tries and conceded only 4.....not bad, not bad at all!

The reports back from South West England selectors was very positive about all our players and I am extremely pleased to announce that 10 of these boys have been asked to go forward to join the South West England training squad. This squad will be the best 35 boys selected from the 8 counties in the South West region.
