Monday 25th September 2017, London Irish brought BT Sport Rugby to local community rugby club, Tadley RFC to film their weekly round-up of news and action from the weeks domestic and European matches. This popular rugby programme, presented by Sarra Elgan and former England player, ex-British and Irish Lions and ex-Harlequins player, Ugo Monye, was recorded, and broadcast on Wednesday 27th September.
BT Sport rugby is on tour this season to meet grassroots rugby fans, and community clubs. London Irish brought the TV cameras to see this close-knit community rugby club on the Hampshire/Berkshire border.
London Irish’ Premiership rugby player Topsy Ojo was also in attendance to meet players and supporters from senior to junior and mini members of Tadley RFC.
Senior players took part in a specialist coaching session which focused on high ball catches, and BT Sport also brought their popular smash-o-meter challenging players to show their strength on hitting a tackle bag.
The rugby stars interacted with the crowd, undertaking the besom broom initiation, meeting the players, founder members, and signing articles of memorabilia in between filming.
The London Irish Community team who worked with the Tadley RFC committee to make this event happen, were also on hand to watch proceedings, throw the ball around with the younger members, and brought London Irish mascot, Digger along to enjoy the event.
After the filming was over, Ugo Monye and Topsy Ojo kindly took the time for a Question and Answer session with the Tadley RFC crowd, and Ugo’s advice to the youngsters was to “back yourself, believe in yourself. Don’t let anyone ever tell you you can’t do something”.
Simon Lapham, Junior Chairman said “This was a great opportunity to showcase our rural community rugby club which draws players and supporters from all surrounding towns, and local primary and secondary schools. We work closely with London Irish, and the RFU and are pleased that London Irish chose us as their representation of grass roots rugby”.
