Thatcham at Home

The Thatcham RFC clubhouse official opening took place on Saturday 10 September 2016 attended by RFU President, Peter Baines, guest of honour, who cut the ribbon, remarking that rugby in England is in a pretty good place at the moment. He congratulated Thatcham RFC on their great achievement and also on their ability to get out three senior sides, with such a small local population and with other local clubs closeby.

The opening took place at 13.00 to allow players to be part of the celebrations before the afternoon’s matches, with both 1st XV and 3rd XV chalking up their first wins of the season. Former RFU President Jonathan Dance, Berks RFU President Steve Cullen and Berkshire RFU Council representative Dave Mcateer attended - alongside other Berkshire RFU and club representatives. Many former Thatcham players also attended and were encouraged to become part of the new Vice President scheme.

Club Chairman, Will Sewell gave the opening address and said it was a proud moment for him and for the club, with the opening coming at the end of a long period of hardwork and monumental fundraising effort from club members, supporters and sponsors.

Bob Moore, Thatcham President thanked other Berkshire clubs for their encouragement and advice and praised the Berkshire County RFU Trust Fund, which gave a real boost to the club’s early fundraising efforts. The club raised over £75,000 itself and other grants came from Sport England, Greenham Common Trust, the RFU, Bernard Sunley Trust and Englefield Trust, with a £100,000 loan from the Rugby Football Foundation.

Playing in Southern Counties, at the highest level in its 35-year history, Thatcham Secretary, Mark Littlechild, emphasised that the focus of effort in the club now was to build on its future by investing in growing the mini and youth section, and using the new building to become a real hub for the local community.

During the ceremony, the Thatcham Town Mayor, Mrs Ellen Crumley awarded Partnership Badges to Will, Bob and Russell Downing, club Treasurer.
