Berkshire RFU Women will take on Kent RFU Women at Reading RFC this Sunday as they begin their 2021/22 Gill Burns Women’s County Championship Division 1 challenge.
We took some time to chat with the Head Coach Lewis Jones to get his thoughts on the woman’s training. and preparation for this seasons post pandemic championship.
WF: Lewis have the girls prepared for the match vs Kent?
LJ: The coaches have been very impressed with the attitude and commitment the players have displayed during the build-up to the county season. The more this group play and train together the better their cohesion becomes, and it really shows session by session.
WF: Did you learn much from the friendly against Bucks?
LJ: The lessons learnt from the game against Bucks were mainly around how we problem solved together and how we play together. It’s never easy bringing players together and expecting them to play like they are season long club mates, but this group have excelled in this and have shown a real passion for getting to know each other and how each other play.
WF: Are the any surprise debuts in the county team?
LJ: The coaches have been impressed with how Lozzie Price-Richards (Centre) and Ruby Cox have played and trained throughout our build up. We are very much looking forward to seeing how they go on Sunday.
LJ: Are are also happy to congratulate to Annette Bevan who will skipper the team on Sunday. She will be supported by her Co-Captains in Katie Phillips, Annabel Hawkins and Lizzie Harris. These 4 have collectively been great during our build up. They often take player led chats, often found coaching younger or less experienced players through what’s happening in the session and just showing great leadership qualities throughout. This is part of what makes rugby and county rugby the game we love that it brings out the leadership, development and teamwork that creates such a positive environment which we plan to bring into the game on Sunday
