John Methold, who has died aged 89, was a leading figure in Berkshire rugby in the 1960s and 1970s
As one of the best local referees at that time, he became President of the Berkshire Referees Society and then President of Berkshire County RFU. A supporter of Redingensians, and with an insurance background, he then became Treasurer of our Sports Club. His well-nigh indecipherable handwriting,which was always bad and got steadily worse, sometimes made it difficult for those working with him, but he kept us on the financial straight and narrow which was the main thing.
He also devoted himself to bowls, becoming President of Wargrave Bowls Club,and he pursued a love of cricket as a member of MCC.
John’s rugby loyalties moved to Henley Hawks where he helped Stuart Pittson in the Ticket Office. I particularly remember John taking me to Dry Lees to watch the Hawks play Bedford Blues and Bristol.
Educated at Eltham College,where he played cricket for the 2nd XI, sadly John was never able to see our friends Old Elthamians in their pomp,but his grandson Sam played for our Youth Section and his son Neil remains one of our VPs.
John died in Bridge House Care Home, Twyford, happily not of Covid-19. Richard Garland, Club Captain in 1972-73, remembers John as “ a gentleman with good,old-fashioned principles”, a tribute I heartily endorse.
