Background

Reading Rugby Football Club (RRFC) is a rugby club established in 1898, which now provides community rugby for a wide range of players and age groups:

  • Senior Men’s teams – 1sts, 2nds, 3rds, Veterans
  • Ladies – 1sts
  • Junior Boys – U12 to U16 & Colts
  • Junior Girls – U13, U15 & U18 age groups
  • Minis – U6 to U11 boys and girls

RRFC is based in Sonning, three miles from the centre of Reading, at extensive grounds which it owns. The facilities include three full-sized pitches (2 floodlit), changing rooms, physio room, main bar, snug and meeting rooms. There is parking for 150 cars on site.
The Senior Men’s 1st are currently in a tight title contest at the top of the Southern Counties North (Level 7). The 2nd and 3rd XV currently play at level 9 and 10 respectively.

This is an opportunity for an ambitious Coach to consolidate their UKCC Level 3 coaching experience, or to work towards that if currently UKCC Level 2.

Role description

  • Job title:                              RRFC Head Coach – Mens Rugby
  • Reports to:                          Director of Rugby
  • Role reporting in:                Assistant Coach – Mens Rugby
  • Important relationships:      Other team coaches & managers, especially senior Men’s and Colts. Senior captains, Video Analyst, Senior Men’s Physiotherapists
  • Main function:                     To develop and coach the RRFC men’s squad to play enjoyable, winning rugby.

Responsibilities

  1. Lead the coaching team responsible for the senior squad (90+ players)
  2. Plan the coaching programme for the season
  3. Plan, prepare and deliver individual coaching sessions for the senior squad
  4. Ensure that all sessions are designed to develop the skills and understanding of the players in the senior squad
  5. Evaluate all coaching sessions and games with the coaching team and players
  6. Attend all coaching sessions and matches involved with the senior squad
  7. Mentor and advise Assistant Coach and players where appropriate
  8. Provide feedback to coaches, players and Director of Rugby
  9. Work within the agreed rugby budget

Qualifications Required UKCC Level 2 minimum, UKCC Level 3 preferable (or working towards) and a record of recent CPD

Experience required 

  1. Proven ability to develop and coach an adult team to achieve defined measures of success, such as promotion into a higher league, improved position within a league or avoiding relegation. In simple terms, we need evidence that the person can make a difference!
  2. Expertise in planning a coaching programme for the season and preparing individual sessions.
  3. Up to date knowledge of rugby playing and coaching techniques which enhance players’ skills and improve match day performance 

Personal qualities required

  1. Leadership – setting an example and standards for the coaching team and squad. Able to inspire the coaching team and players to ensure that all involved maximise their potential. Willing to make difficult decisions about selection of players and standards of coaching.
  2. Delegation – able to delegate agreed responsibilities to the Assistant Coaches, to ensure that their expertise is used effectively and they feel valued.
  3. Team Work – skilled at building and maintaining positive relationships with the players, coaches, manager and the main club 
  4. Punctuality – sets the timekeeping standards for the coaches, manager and squad.

Other requirements 

  1. This position will require a considerable time commitment of two weekday evenings and one weekend day (usually Saturday), during the pre-season and main season, i.e. from July to April. There are some ‘free weekends’, when no League match is scheduled. It is expected that any personal weekend commitments will be planned around these dates.
  2. Full driver’s licence
  3. DBS check will be required
