England RFU have listened carefully to schools, colleges and universities about the high demand to have rugby trained teachers and coaches across the education sector. This joint ambition is increasingly important to reassure staff, leaders, governing bodies and parents about our ongoing drive for an inclusive, attractive and safe game.
A nationwide summer training programme of FREE introduction to rugby courses has been launched. Funded by England Schools RFU and England Colleges RFU, 60 courses based on Kids First Contact courses will run across the country in May and June.
It is fantastic to see over 500 teachers have already booked on to courses and would love to welcome even more!
The programme is targeted at staff and students across the education sector and has been designed according to feedback on when they have most availability to attend courses – in the summer term and on weekdays.
These courses are ideal for all rugby deliverers; including staff new to delivering contact rugby, as a refresher, or as a stepping stone to the England Rugby Coaching Award in the autumn.
In addition to these Kids First Contact courses, a programme of eight regional development days, aimed at anyone delivering in Education or the Age Grade game will be taking place in June.

We believe every school, college and university with a rugby programme will have staff and/or students who will benefit from attending – please pass this on so they can book on a local course.
England Rugby’s Introduction to Contact (“Kids First Contact”) courses are aimed at those delivering XRugby (our reduced contact format), those new to delivering contact rugby or those supporting delivery of the contact game. England Rugby recommends that anyone delivering contact rugby is suitably qualified and the Kids First Contact course is the minimum level expected.
Courses are 6-hours and cover how to safely introduce and referee the tackle, scrum (3 player scrum) and the contact areas with modules on player safety, refereeing and core values.
